John Edwards III, in his own words
If he could speak to us today, John Edwards III might describe his life as follows.

There is little to say about me, although I lived to be more than 80. I was born in Halifax County in September 1802.
My wife as Ann Eliza S. Oliver whom I married in Halifax County 12 April (bond) 1838,† and our 7 children grew up in southern Halifax County, the nearest city being South Boston.
The Census of 1850 for the Southern District of Halifax County counted me, a 45-year-old planter, living with my wife, Eliza, and five children: Josephine 12, Susan 10, Richard 8, John 6, and Mary, age 4. Itís hard to believe that just eleven years later our Richard would be a soldier.†
Ann died 8 March 1874 and I, 11 years later, on 8 January 1885.

By 1860, Johnís household included Josephine 19, Emma 18, Richard 17, John A. 15, and daughter C.S., aged 12,† and in 1870 it included Josephine 27, Emma 25, John 28, and Mattie 21. Presumably Mattie was identical to C.S. of 10 years earlier.† Daughters Mattie and Emma, and grandson John Thomas Edwards were living in the household of 78-year-old John Edwards in 1880.†
