Isaac Russell, in his own words |
| If he could speak to us today, Isaac Russell might describe his life as follows. |
Although I owned land next to my father, Jeffrey Russell, on Piney Creek in Mecklenburg County, my name appeared in Brunswick County records, often with members of the Laffoon family. |
The name of my first wife, the mother of Henry and Catherine, is not known. I married as my second wife Elizabeth Strange, a daughter of Owen Strange whose plantation was in western Brunswick County about 2 miles west of Meredithville. |
Simon Laffoon and I were securities for the estate of William Scarbrough in 1804. I disappeared from Virginia before 1810. |

Isaac purchased 90 acres on Piney Creek from his brother John in 1785 for £200, and in 1793 John Covington sold him about 175 acres on Rock Branch. |
 Background on Owen Strange |
Owen Strange was born in St. Peter’s Parish to the wife of Thomas Strange 23 Jan. 1716/7. Thomas was born perhaps about 1690, the son of Alexander Strange who died in St. Peter’s 2 Nov. 1725. |
Owen Strange acquired by patent 430 acres on both sides of Spring Branch and the south side of Shining Creek in 1760, and paid taxes on two polls and two slaves in Brunswick County in 1782. |
Owen’s 1794 will in Brunswick County devised “Negro girl Silva” to daughter Elizabeth Russell and mentioned her sons, Owen Russell and Jeffrey Russell. Isaac made a purchase from Strange’s estate in 1795. |
It is notable that Owen Strange omits Isaac Russell’s older children from his will. Consequently, we are presuming that Elizabeth Strange was Isaac’s 2nd wife and not the mother of Catherine and Henry Russell. |
