| If he could speak to us today, James Nicholas Vaughan might describe his life as follows. |

I was born 17 September 1815 in Nottoway County. My first wife was Sarah A. Holt, a daughter of James Holt, whom I married 17 July 1844.  Sarah passed away just five years later, on 26 January 1849, leaving us no children. I was farming when the census was taken in 1850 and 1860. |

On 27 November 1850 I married Rebecca Jane Robertson. Our first three children, all daughters, had poor health and each died before they reached their twentieth birthday. |
|
Doctors did not expect our son, Joseph, to live long either. Yet before I died 10 March 1894, he gave me eight grandchildren, including Holmes Arthur Vaughan. |
|
Rebecca, who lived as a widow with our son Joseph 26 years, passed on 7 April 1920. |
